Beef Trade: What are the Irish factories quoting this week?
Last week’s beef kill rose to 39,044, according to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s database.
Breakdown:
- Young bulls: 4,570;
- Bulls: 560;
- Steers: 12,790;
- Cows: 7,002;
- Heifers: 11,701.
- Total (including week commencing February 10th): 246,331.
38,198 cattle were presented for slaughtered during the corresponding week last year.
Quotes
In terms of quotes this week, factories are offering a base price of €3.65-€3.70/kg for steers, while between €3.70-€3.75/kg is available for heifers.
€3.40-€3.70/kg is on the table for young O/R/U grade bulls, while cull cow quotes are ranging from €2.80/kg up to €3.20/kg for R grade-types.
The IFA’s Brendan Golden has said that some factory procurement managers are actively buying in marts, “paying prices well above what they are prepared to offer on-farm”.
He pointed out that factory procurement managers and agents are “rapidly chasing cattle” and trying to negotiate deals to pin down tighter supplies in the weeks ahead.
