Within an hour of the opening of the Royal Highland Show it became very clear that there was one topic at the top of the agri-political agenda – food security.
The issue has suddenly overtaken all other concerns due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and the long tail of Covid-related disruption to supply chains.
Environment minister Mairi McAllan, deputising for Covid-struck Cabinet Secretary Mairi Gougeon, told guests at a Quality Meat Scotland breakfast that the findings of a short-term Food Security Supply Task Force had just been published.
The taskforce, which met for the first time in March, was jointly chaired by Ms Gougeon and James Withers, chief executive of Scotland Food and Drink.
Among the recommendations is the creation of a dedicated Food Security within the Scottish Government. This will be responsible for monitoring food supplies and providing early warning of problems.
