Job Purpose:  Purchasing of livestock by achieving best price for procurement of suitably graded cattle and sheep to meet weekly production targets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Procure suitably graded livestock (beef cattle and sheep)
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with suppliers (including farmers, auctioneers and other third parties)
  • Maintain extensive knowledge on reliable suppliers in region
  • Understand and maintain knowledge on appropriate pricing levels
  • Estimate animal value and negotiate pricing with supplier and in line with agreed business rates
  • Continuously seek out opportunities for livestock acquisition
  • Provide advice for the proper care of livestock, leading to more successful production
  • Develop reports on competitors’ actions, such as buying trends, and inform Procurement team and/or Site Manager
  • Inspect livestock on location to ensure good health and animal welfare obligations are met
  • Keep current on animal supply and overall market conditions and trends
  • Maintain records of all transactions
  • Arrange post-purchase transportation of animals to site


Skills/ Experience

  • Good understanding of livestock being purchased essential
  • Qualification or transferable experience in Agribusiness, marketing, or animal science essential
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and negotiating skills essential
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to follow and forecast future trends
  • Capable of making sound business decisions quickly and while under pressure
  • Commitment to good practice
  • Communicates well in written and oral form with multi-nationals on all levels
  • Ability to multitask and work under own initiative to deliver to deadlines
  • Relationship builder with influencing skills
  • Good IT skills
