We are currently seeking applications for Trainee Official Veterinarians within Food Standard Scotland based in various locations within scotland, a list of these locations can be found in the attached Location Document.
This is a permanent and pensionable appointment and new entrants will normally start on the minimum of the pay range.

The Trainee Official Veterinarian role is one of the key front-line operational roles within the FSS. On appointment the successful candidate will undertake a comprehensive training programme (12-14 weeks) covering all aspects of the Official Veterinarian role and upon qualification will deliver Official Controls in approved premises across Scotland, ensuring that food produced is safe for human consumption.
The core work for the OV (upon satisfactory completion of the training period) is the delivery of Official Controls related to products of animal origin (POAO) in FSS approved premises within Scotland (Red and White meat slaughterhouses, Cutting Plants and Game handling establishments).
The FSS Official Veterinarian is the technical lead for field teams in all aspects related to verification of the Food Business Operator’s compliance with all relevant legislation as stated in the FSS Scottish Manual for Official Controls.
It is expected, depending of the requirement of the business, that Trainee Official Veterinarian’s will also obtain the qualifications required to certify exports of POAO.
Must be willing to travel to various locations. Must hold a valid driving license and own a private vehicle or be able to travel to work by other suitable means of transport. Must be able to pass a colour blindness test. Must satisfactorily complete the tOV training period and pass the final assessment
Veterinary degree and member of RCVS
