Farming can help the debate about livestock and the environment become less polarised by explaining how complex and different farming systems are, and what the industry is doing to address climate change. 

That was the underlying thinking behind an NFU seminar about livestock and the environment this week, held mainly for mainstream press in London.

The key take-home message was farming systems and people’s diets are far too varied and complicated to say that eating a vegan diet is automatically healthier for people and the planet.

Dr Michelle Cain, research associate at the University of Oxford, said: “Being vegan does not suddenly eradicate your footprint. I do not know how we can recommend the most sustainable diet without investigating every single food product.”
