The fast food giant has announced its decision to close its 1,350 UK stores from March 23 to negate the spread of the virus.

In a social media statement made on March 22, McDonald’s said the decision was ‘difficult’ but necessary to ensure the ‘wellbeing and safety of staff and customers’.

Recent weeks has seen the virus disrupt the food service sector, with consumers choosing to eat at home rather than out, placing pressure on retail supply operations.

Around 16,000 farmers supply McDonald’s and provide the company with an estimated 50,000 tonnes of UK & Irish beef per annum.
