Red meat businesses will have the opportunity to gain valuable insight on exporting to Canada through a webinar scheduled for October 19th. The event will offer a comprehensive overview of key considerations, including tips for navigating route to market, compliance, and customs clearances.

In addition to these crucial topics, participants will be granted access to vital information on imports, sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures, labelling requirements, documentation, and checklists, providing them with the strongest possible foundation to take advantage of the export opportunities that Canada has to offer in regards to UK pork, beef, and lamb.

The webinar will feature a presentation by MCS Associates Inc., a consulting firm based in Ontario, specializing in providing expert advice on regulatory and quality compliance of products, including the development of regulatory compliant documentation and obtaining required licenses for importation into Canada.

Research conducted by Prospects for UK agri-food exports: North America indicates that Canada presents a significant opportunity for UK red meat exporters. With low levels of tariff protection for lamb imports, Canada is a net importer of lamb. Although consumption per capita is low, pockets of high demand exist, and consumers place a strong emphasis on quality and naturalness. Consumers in Canada will also appreciate beef products that are grass-fed, organic, antibiotic-free, and hormone-free.

UK exporters should consider these factors when exporting premium products to Canada. For pork, emphasis should be placed on outdoor-bred, organic, and hormone-free products.

The value of beef shipments from the UK to Canada in 2022 is expected to be worth £13.1m – an increase of 77% on the previous year. Meanwhile, the value of sheep meat shipped to Canada increased 160% to almost £5m from almost £1.9m the previous year. Pork export value remained stable at £7.7m.
