France makes fresh bid to ban meat names for plant-based food
France has revealed revised proposals to ban the use of meat-related names, such as “steak” and “spare ribs,” for plant-based food produced in the country.
The intention is to avoid “misleading claims” that some meat alternatives can make. As the first country in the European Union to introduce such a restriction,
France had previously attempted to pass a similar measure in June last year. However, it was halted by the country’s highest administrative court a month later, as it deemed the proposal too vague and the timeline too short.
With a sharp rise in the global plant-based protein market in recent years, fuelled mainly by the increasing demand for eco-friendly and healthy food, the industry’s tendency to use references to meat products has provoked strong opposition from livestock farmers and meat processors in France, the EU’s biggest agricultural producer.
