Australian lamb and mutton exports hit record high
Australian exports of lamb and mutton reached record highs in 2023, with Chinese sales up significantly.
Exports of lamb reached 326,014 tonnes, with mutton exports at 209,580t, according to Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).
Tim Jackson, MLA global supply analyst, said: “China was the largest market, with lamb exports lifting 30 per cent to 67,763t and mutton exports rising 70 per cent to 97,481t over the year.
“China took in slightly more than half of the additional sheepmeat exported over the year, with an overall sheepmeat market share of 31 per cent.”
Outside of China the largest increase was seen in exports to the Middle East and North Africa.
“After a relatively soft 2022, sheepmeat exports to the region rose 63 per cent to 95,889t,” he said.
