Waitrose puts lamb hearts back on menu
Waitrose is to reintroduce lamb hearts to its stores as Britons embrace more traditional cuts of meat.
The supermarket scrapped selling the hearts in 2016, having first put them on the menu five years earlier.
But the chain will offer the delicacy for sale again from Wednesday in an effort to cater for customers wanting nose-to-tail eating.
Priced at £3.50 per kilo, the hearts are much more wallet-friendly than other lamb products offered by the supermarket.
Essential Waitrose lamb chops cost £8 for a 364g pack. For those buying the premium version, Duchy Organic British Lamb Loin Chops, the price is £30 a kilo, 8.6 times the cost of the hearts.
Offal ready meals are also available at the retailer. A bacon and lamb’s liver meal with potato and bacon is priced at £3.50.
Lamb hearts are nutrient-dense, with a 100g serving containing 25g of protein and 185 calories, according to supplement company Hunter and Gather.
Kate Overy, a nutritionist at Waitrose, said: “Cooked lamb’s heart is high in protein, phosphorus, iron, copper, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin B12, and [is] a source of Vitamin B6, thiamin and zinc.”
