New Zealand’s red meat sector has warmly welcomed the announcement of a new trade agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), viewing it as a significant opportunity to expand market access and strengthen economic ties with the Gulf region.

The UAE is a key trading partner for New Zealand, particularly in the food and agricultural sectors. The UAE has emerged as a lucrative market for New Zealand lamb and beef. The new agreement is expected to reduce tariffs and streamline export procedures, making New Zealand products more competitive in the region.

Boost to Red Meat Exports

The New Zealand Meat Industry Association (MIA) praised the deal, highlighting its potential to increase red meat exports to the UAE. “This agreement is a big win for New Zealand’s red meat sector. The UAE is an important market for us, and reducing trade barriers will make our products more accessible to consumers who value high-quality, sustainably produced meat,” said MIA Chief Executive Sirma Karapeeva.

In 2023, New Zealand’s red meat exports to the UAE were valued at over NZD 200 million, with lamb and mutton making up the majority of the shipments. The new trade agreement is expected to boost these figures, providing a platform for further growth in the Middle East.

Strong Demand

The UAE’s growing population, along with its thriving hospitality and tourism sectors, has driven demand for premium imported meats. New Zealand’s grass-fed, sustainably produced lamb and beef are well-regarded in the region, where consumers increasingly seek out products that align with health, quality, and ethical standards.

“This trade agreement ensures that New Zealand red meat producers can continue to meet the strong demand in the UAE market. Our products have a strong reputation for quality and safety, and with fewer trade barriers, we are well-positioned to expand our market share,” said Karapeeva.

New Zealand’s Trade Minister, Damien O’Connor, hailed the agreement as a major success for the country’s exporters. “This trade deal will deliver tangible benefits to New Zealand’s red meat industry and deepen our economic partnership with the UAE,” he said. “We are committed to supporting our exporters as they capitalise on new opportunities in the region.”
