GB Pig Prices Update: Drop in EU-spec SPP
Weekly pig prices and slaughter data for Great Britain.
The EU-spec SPP dropped back again during the week ended September 21, losing 0.29p to 208.97p/kg. It has now lost 1.21p over the past four weeks to dip below 209p/kg for the first time since February 2023, and stands 14.5p below the same week last year.
The APP, which includes premium pigs, lost 0.25p during the week ended September 14 to stand at 213.87p/kg, after the previous week’s loss of nearly 1p. This increased the gap to the SPP to nearly 3p for the week.
The EU pig price has been coming down in recent weeks. The EU reference price (S grade) dropped back again during the week ended September 15, losing 0.6p to stand at 177.81p/kg, with the gap to the equivalent UK reference price remaining at close to 34p, an historically big difference.
Estimated GB slaughterings for the week ended September 21 were 1,600 down up on the previous week to 163,400 head, which, in line with recent weeks, was 5,000 above the same week last year. While Defra now appears to have resolved its data issues, these figures, as always, remain subject to revision.
Average carcase weights moved up again slightly during the week ended September 22, gaining a 0.06kg to reach 90.64kg in the SPP sample. This was just over 1kg above the same week in 2023.
