The Welsh Conservatives have called for CCTV to become mandatory in abattoirs, branding the Government’s voluntary approach to date a ‘failure’.

Janet Finch-Saunders, the party’s Shadow Rural Affairs Minister, demanded the change be made after a Freedom of Information (FOI) request showed just one slaughterhouse had received a payment of £2,689 to install CCTV under the Food Business Investment Scheme.

Only three more applications were made to install or upgrade CCTV as part of the scheme, out of the 23 operational abattoirs in Wales.

The most recent publicly available statistics, published in 2016, show just eight Welsh slaughterhouses had any form of CCTV, a figure which included the three largest plants.
