2 Sisters ‘moving ahead’ with closure of Anglesey factory
Food giant 2 Sisters is ‘moving ahead’ with its closure plan for an Anglesey chicken abattoir. The firm announced the Llangefni site was at risk last month – with over 700 jobs under threat.
The 2 Sisters Food Group said the site was old and would require significant investment to bring it up to the same standard as its other locations. They also told Ynys Mon MP Virginia Crosbie that the spiralling energy costs were a factor.
The firm said its products could be made more efficiently elsewhere but had said it would explore options before making final decisions on closure.
A Task Force was set up with Welsh Government working with UK Government and Anglesey council to see if there was a way to save the jobs or help staff made redundant if the closure went ahead.
But Welsh Government today said that the company is now moving ahead with plans to cease production.
A 2 Sisters spokesman said: “We continue our positive engagement with the Llangefni taskforce group and our central focus at this stage is to partner with all agencies to support colleagues and explore every avenue in helping them now and after the consultation period.”
Rhun ap Iorwerth, Member of the Senedd for Ynys Môn, said it is “heart-breaking for everyone who works there and their families”.
The Llangefni site is owned by Amber Real Estates Investments Ltd a related company to 2 Sisters. A spokesman said a sale is an option once a final decision to close to site is made.
