GB pig prices for week ending February 25, 2023 – SPP inches up

Weekly pig prices and slaughter data for Great Britain.

The UK pig price continues to rise, although the rate of increase is slowing. Following last week’s 0.73p increase, the EU-spec SPP moved up by a further 0.58p during the week ended February 25 to reach 207.71p/kg, yet another record high.

The price index has now risen by 7.5p over the past seven weeks, following the surprise New Year dip, as pig supplies remain tight at home and EU pig prices continue to soar.

The SPP is now nearly 70p ahead of where it was a year ago and, combined with lower input costs, means the outlook continues to improve, although there is still a very long way to go to claw back the losses of the past two years.

The APP has now moved beyond the 210p/kg mark. After the previous week’s dip of nearly 1p, the APP was up 2.10p to 210.91p/kg for the week ending February 18. The gap between the two price averages has widened to nearly 4p.
