Dozens of firefighters tackled a large fire in the early hours at a meat processing factory in Wolverhampton.

Crews were called just after 02:00 GMT to the single-story unit occupied by food provider ScotBeef in Stafford Road.

West Midlands Fire Service said about 40 firefighters battled the blaze, which was contained within an annex and did not spread to the main building.

Police and ambulance supported on site but there were no reports of injuries.

The fire service said 10 appliances assisted at the peak of the incident, when a large smoke plume could be seen drifting towards the city.

People living nearby were advised to keep windows and doors shut, but incident commander Kevin Eaves said smoke had since dissipated.

“Our crews have managed to stop the fire from spreading to the main building, which will enable the business to continue as it has been,” he added.
