Concerns Grow Over Polish Poultry Farms Supplying the UK

Polish poultry imports to the UK are facing renewed scrutiny after concerns were raised over whether chicken from farms lacking required environmental permits could be entering the British market.

According to Poultry World, the British Poultry Council is seeking assurances that poultry meat from Polish farms operating without the necessary permissions is not being supplied into the UK. The concern follows investigative findings that almost half of Poland’s 2,000 largest poultry farms may not hold the required environmental and pollution control permits.

Poland is one of the UK’s largest poultry suppliers, making the issue significant for importers, retailers, foodservice buyers and domestic producers. The concern is not simply about paperwork, but about whether farms operating outside normal permitting systems are subject to the same environmental oversight and controls expected elsewhere.

The Polish Chief Inspectorate for Environmental Protection has reportedly asked regional inspectors to verify records on industrial poultry farms requiring permits, following the wider investigation into so called “ghost farms”.

For the UK poultry sector, the issue raises questions around supply chain transparency, import standards and fair competition. British producers are likely to argue that imported poultry must meet comparable standards if domestic production is to remain commercially viable.
