Cancer charity in row with farmers after it launches ‘meat-free March’

Farmers are in a row with a cancer charity after it asked its supporters to take part in “meat-free March”.
Macmillan was forced to stop promoting the month-long fundraiser after widespread anger from the agricultural industry.
“Every meat-free moment matters,” the charity said. “Whether you go meat-free, or ditch dairy as well, how you take part in Meat-Free March is up to you.”
However, farmers called this a “kick in the teeth” and asked the charity to support British agriculture instead of starting a new vegan month when there is already ‘Veganuary’.
Some said they would withhold donations.
The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (AIMS) said the meat-free campaign is “totally disgraceful”, adding: “The farming community is a big supporter of cancer charities but maybe they’ll now think twice and perhaps just support a local hospice or more worthy charities.”
Sarah Brookes, a farmer from near Swindon, tweeted: “I’m sorry, but if you do not intend to support British farming, then I will not long be supporting Macmillan with my donations.”
The National Farmers’ Union also complained about the initiative.
