Pig prices continue to hit new highs
Increasingly tighter supplies are driving pig prices to new record highs, but European price progression has slowed.
The EU-spec standard pig price (SPP) rose by 1.41p/kg to reach 213.94p/kg in the week ended March 25, with tight supplies and strong EU prices pushing prices higher.
It was the eleventh consecutive upward move since the start of 2023, with SPP at 60p/kg ahead of levels a year ago.
However, the National Pig Association said prices in Europe appeared to have ‘steadied’. The EU reference price fell back slightly for the first time in eight weeks, dropping by 0.11p/kg to 202.57p/kg during the week ended March 19.
The Spanish price gained another 3p/kg and France was up 7p/kg, but Germany and the Netherlands were both down by around 2p/kg.
This means the gap between the EU and UK reference prices increased slightly to 8.5p/kg. But NPA highlighted this remained well below typical levels, with the gap in late January standing at nearly 30p/kg.
