GB pig prices for week ending August 20
AHDB Pork’s weekly pig prices, slaughter data and commentary for Great Britain
The GB EU-spec SPP edged closer to the 200p/kg mark in the week ending August 20, averaging 198.06p/kg. This was up 0.66p from the previous week. The measure stood 39p above the equivalent week last year, and 41p above the five-year average.
European prices have generally moved upwards over the last few weeks, with tighter supplies reportedly being met with an uplift in demand towards the end of the holiday season.
An estimated 157,000 clean pigs were processed during the week, 6% (10,000 head) fewer than the week before. Reports of disruption at plants, including flooding, may have contributed. Demand was also reported to be flat.
Carcase weights averaged 87.4kg, 400g lighter than the week before, and just 220g heavier than the average weight reported at this point a year ago.
In the week ending August 13, the EU-spec APP averaged 201.64p/kg, up 1.88p from the previous week. This put the measure 37p above the price recorded a year ago at this point, and up 40p on the five-year average. The gap between the SPP and APP for that week widened to 4.24p.
