Cotswold campaign which has support from nearby farmer Jeremy Clarkson needs to raise £3m in pledges in just days.

A farmer-led community group has launched a funding bid to save Warwickshire’s last small abattoir from being sold off to housing developers.

The ‘Save Long Compton Abattoir’ campaign was launched last week and has just days to find the £3 million required to purchase the facility which serves Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire.

Farmer and butcher Nick Francis who runs Paddock Farm and Butchery in Lower Brailes, said the the group was urgently seeking would-be investors to save the abattoir, which has served farmers around the Cotswold village of Long Compton since 1958.

“The loss of the abattoir would be devastating for local farmers,” Mr Francis said. “The nearest one involves driving around one hour 40 minutes, which impacts animal welfare and costs. It could mean smaller livestock farmers simply give up as the expense of moving only a few animals is too much.”
