Meat Buyer / Protein Buyer

Rugby, Warwickshire

£40,000 – £50,000 per annum 

40 hours per week – Monday to Friday

Hours: 07:00 – 16:00

We have an exciting new role, where we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Meat Buyer / Protein Buyer to join our procurement team in Rugby. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in sourcing, negotiating, and managing relationships with suppliers to ensure the consistent availability of top-quality meats and poultry for our foodservice clients.

The successful candidate will integrate themselves with the team at Rugby and at our National Distribution Centre in Waltham Cross, Herts, ensuring that they understand all key metrics to best fulfil this role, including stock positioning, stock turn, forecasted sales, effects of promotions, school holidays, etc.

Ultimately, it will be down to you and your knowledge, as to how far you take the progression of this role within our business!

Duties will include, but not limited to: 

  • Identify, evaluate, and establish relationships with meat & poultry suppliers, ensuring a reliable and commercially competitive supply chain.
  • Negotiate favourable terms, including pricing, quality standards, delivery schedules, and payment terms.
  • Monitor supplier performance and conduct regular assessments to ensure compliance with agreed-upon standards.
  • Stay informed about market trends, pricing fluctuations, and industry developments related to meat & poultry products.
  • Conduct thorough market research to identify new suppliers and emerging opportunities for cost savings and quality improvement.
  • Collaborate with the Technical team to establish and maintain strict quality standards for all meat products.
  • Work closely with the Rugby and Waltham Cross Teams to optimise stock levels and minimise waste.
  • Develop and implement effective inventory control measures to ensure product availability while minimising excess stock.
  • Analyse pricing trends and market conditions to recommend pricing adjustments when necessary.
  • Liaise regularly with all relevant business functions.

We are looking for applicants with the following skills, attributes, and experience:

  • Keen analytical ability & problem-solving skills.
  • Have a thorough understanding of the process from demand plan through to despatch, and how Raw Material planning links into this process.
  • Strong relationship person, to maximise negotiating leverage.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work to tight deadlines within a dynamic and fast-moving environment.
  • Able to work on own initiative & knowing when to seek support / guidance.
  • Strong PC skills including MS Excel.
